Obituary for Clarence Richard "Dick" Neher Jr.
Clarence Richard (Dick) Neher, 105 years old, of Kilmarnock, Virginia passed away on March 9, 2019 at his home. He was the son of the late Clarence Raymond Neher and Flo Crisman Neher and the husband of the late Patricia Collet Neher for over 74 years. He was also predeceased by his sister, Betty Neher Luby.
Dick was born on January 17, 1914.
He was graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1935, Corps of Engineering, with a Reserve Commission, having been a member of the famous Highty-Tighties Cadet Band.
During World War II in the Pacific Theater, Dick was called into service in the South Pacific as a Second Lieutenant. By the end of the war and through the Reserves until 1965, he rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
After World War II, he became a Certified Public Accountant and established and expanded a successful private practice in Lynchburg, Virginia, until his retirement in 1988.
All of his adult life, he enjoyed his leisure time playing tennis and golf and especially sailing around Nantucket and on the Chesapeake Bay. For decades, Pat and he enjoyed many trips up and down the Intracoastal Waterway to and from Florida-and beyond.
Dick and Pat lived on Hilton Head Island in South Carolina for a few years after retirement before settling in the Northern Neck on Indian Creek to resume their love affair with the Chesapeake Bay.
He is survived by his sister, Flo Neher Traywick; by his daughter, Patricia Neher Cockrell and her husband, Glenn Cutchin Cockrell; by his son, Richard d'Argy Neher and his wife, Nancy Francis Neher; by his grandchildren, Ann Collet Cockrell Harrell and her husband, Martin Seward Harrell, Matthew d'Argy Neher and his wife, Julie Young Neher and Kathryn Francis Neher Lewis and her husband, Jessie Garrett Lewis; by his great grandchildren, Caroline Collet Harrell, Finley David d'Argy Neher, Augustus Henri Neher, Clive Thomas Neher, Kiera Charlotte Lewis and Dalton Bear Lewis and by his beloved nieces and nephews and their families.
A graveside service will be held 11:00 a. m. Saturday, March 16, 2019 at White Marsh Cemetery, Brookvale , Virginia.
