Obituary

OPHELIA—Edwin Doug Smoot, 78, of Ophelia went home to his Lord and Savior on May 5, 2019, following a courageous battle with lung cancer.
He was preceded in death by his father, E. Russell Smoot; mother, Margaret H. Smoot; and son, Edwin Douglas Smoot Jr.
Surviving are his beloved wife of 44 years, Constance Anderson McDearmon; brother, Elwood Smoot and wife, Harlean Smoot; sister, Peggy Crane; his daughters, Kimberly Buchannan and Cecelia McDearmon Dicken, grandchildren, Edwin Douglas Smoot III, Mary Catherine Day, Michael Buchannan Jr., Margaret Smoot, Jessica Dicken and Jeffrey Dicken; three great-grandchildren; and a multitude of friends of all ages.
Doug’s greatest joy was family, especially the numerous vacations with the grandchildren.
He dearly loved his and Constance’s adopted family, the Nguyens: Kim, Charlie and their children, Michael, Lysa and Leanne.
Doug’s loving heart for young people was legendary. He had an affinity for them all, from ones he met in the grocery store to the youth groups hosted in the Ophelia home.
He was a respected leader for the Culpepper Farmer’s Co-Op where he was employed for 35 years before he and his loving wife retired to the Northern Neck.
Doug loved the Lord and saw God’s hand in every aspect of life. After joining St Stephen’s Church (now Light of Christ) in Heathsville, he found great satisfaction in participating in many activities, including serving as head of the usher ministry for more than a decade.
Doug loved boating and to watch the wildlife, birds and gardens from his deck overlooking Ellison Creek and the gardens he diligently tended.
His humble smile, level head and willingness to help anyone, anytime with anything will be missed.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 8, at Light of Christ Church, 9500 Northumberland Highway, Heathsville. A luncheon will follow.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Anglican Frontier Missions, PO Box 18038, Richmond, VA 23226; or Light of Christ, PO Box 609, Heathsville, VA 22473.
